Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Review

So I'm a bit late on this world event...but I did read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

It was definitely different from the other Harry Potter books, mostly because it was focused on Harry's son but also because it was in play format. Readers seemed surprised by the differences in this style of writing. The thing is, Rowling didn't actually write it. Sure she worked on it and planned out big plot points, but Jack Thorne is the official playwright.

Something that I've heard that I completely agree with is it seems more like fan fiction. And it totally does.

It's the same characters that we know and love with similar problems and lifestyles. But the story itself seems more like a suggestion of their futures, not their futures set in stone. This may have to do with the presence of time turners, but I took the story as someone's idea of what might have happened to all the characters I've grown up with.

That being said, I really liked it.

It had all the magical quirks of living in a modern world as wizarding folk. It had the same strong friendships and sense of reckless adventure. There were big mistakes and acts of heroism. And that's what Harry Potter is all about. Life isn't simpler because you have magic, if anything it's more complicated. But you learn and love and grow. Just like us normal people, which is why we love these stories.

So don't take it too seriously, just relax and enjoy another glimpse of the wizarding world.
